Bing Now Supports “Fact Checking” ClaimReview Markup

Joe Hall · August 11, 2017 ·

Bing LogoBing has now added support for ClaimReview markup, following Google’s lead from last year.

Google first supported the ClaimReview markup feature nine months ago. This markup was created to fact-check various claims made on web pages.

Now that Bing has added this markup, they have created a new Bing ClaimReview section which shares information about the feature. Bing says that these markups are to be used for conveying information to users regarding fact checking information. These annotations use an enhanced display to show the validity behind a claim.

To use this specific tag on articles and other content, users first need to meet and adhere to the following set of criteria:

  • Fact check claims should be easily discernible, meaning that an audience can quickly comprehend the facts that have been verified along with the conclusions gained.
  • All citations and references must include references to original data sources while being transparent and clear.
  • The fact checking tag must clearly identify what was checked in the article.

It’s a logical next step that Bing will soon begin to annotate their search results with this new ClaimReview markup, even though Bing has made no formal announcement of any kind.

Google has now been supporting ClaimReview for several months, giving users the option to include a claim review summary for claims that have been fact checked. Google first introduced Claim review in 2016, helping readers to understand the validity of key facts included in news stories.

Users found not adhering to the Claim Review markup criteria set will either have their markup ignored by Google, or the article will be removed from Google News.
